My intent is to
assure those of you out there who are timid or scared to try sewing
that you aren't alone and encourage you to learn along with me as I
make mistakes. And to maybe give those of you seasoned seamstresses a
hearty laugh as you remember what it was like to be a newbie :)
Join me on my
journey as I learn how to sew!
My goals while
keeping this blog:
- learn to sew knits
- sew an advanced pattern
- learn to alter patterns
Some background:
I come from 2 of the sewing-est ladies
I know, and am convinced that if I am related to them, I surely must
have it in me to learn this!!
My mom has always been crafty. She sewed clothes for my brother and I when we were little and did accents in our home – curtains, pillows, cushions, slipcovers. It just seems to come very naturally to her. My mom's awesome... she sews, she crochets, she plastic canvasses, and everything she makes looks polished and professional. She made matching dresses for me and my dolls when I was little and made my tree skirt that I use every year :) Thank you mumma!! She always has some kind of project going and can fix ANYTHING. Anything I bring to her, handmade or store bought – if it needs repair or to be fixed from some crazy thing I decided to do to it, she can make it right.

My other sewing guru is my Aunt C. She
has been sewing, legend has it, since the dawn of time. And I’ll
tell you something, she isn't even as old as the dawn of time, so
that tells you how great of a seamstress she is!! She made the more
complicated stuff, I was told, when we were little and my cousin had
some awesome dresses I remember being quite jealous of :) She made
her own prom dress (a feat I cannot even fathom ever being able to
do) and she's the one who can sew like a girl in a Disney movie: she
gets her sewing machine out and forest animals start showing up to
iron her fabric, tidy up her sewing room and dance around with her
dress form. No joke – I’ve seen this happen. My aunt is like
Samantha from Bewitched – she wiggles her nose and POOF there's
this gorgeous handmade garment hanging on a hanger in front of you
and you kind of have to look around and go “uhhh where did that
come from”? She's worked at fabric stores as long as I can remember
and I don't think she's ever not known the answer to a sewing
question I’ve had.
Again, genetically
coming from these 2 ladies, I have the ultimate background to be
successful! I'm practically guaranteed to be a great seamstress! So
why am I so bad at this so far?!?! ha ha
I just didn't have an interest in it as
a kid. My mom and her sister would get together on the weekends and
set up their sewing machines together and just sew sew sew. My
cousins and I were playing barbies, my little ponies, and being
giggly girls. As I grew older, I was the cliché obnoxious teenager:
if my mom liked doing it, well it certainly wasn't cool.
Fast forward: I have recently have
developed an interest in making my own clothes. I've kind of toyed
with the thought over the years, but always assumed it was a skill I
didn't posses. I've noticed as I get older and my body changes that I
would like to make clothes that fit my body. I also want to be
able to create thing that are too extravagant to purchase, like
really nice costumes. My husband and I eventually want to go the
pirate's ball one day and I want to be able to make our outfits.
So here are my tries:
